A statue of Virginia Dare carved by sculptor Louisa Lander was gifted to the state of North Carolina in 1926. The statue was modeled in Rome in 1859 and completed in 1860.

While en route to the U.S. a horrific storm caused the ship to wreck off the coast of Spain. After the statue's recovery from the ocean two years later, Ms. Lander restored it to its original beauty and it was placed in an exhibit in Boston.

The building where the statue was on display, caught fire and the statue barely escaped the flames. Fortunately, it did not sustain damage from smoke or water used to extinguish the fire.

Louisa Lander bequeathed the statue to North Carolina in 1926. It now resides in the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island.
