American Indian Medical Scholarship (AIMS)The American Indian Medical Scholarship (AIMS) was established by the National Society as one of its earliest educational initiatives to provide students of Native American heritage with opportunities to pursue careers in nursing, healthcare, and health education. The program traces its origins to 1928, when the Pennsylvania Society created a nursing scholarship for two Native American women who had been accepted to a Pennsylvania nursing school but lacked the financial resources to attend. With support from the NSCDA, these scholars earned accredited nursing degrees and returned to serve the healthcare needs of their tribal communities. Today, AIMS awards 16 scholarships to Native American students from across all 50 states. Each scholarship provides $1,500 per semester for up to eight semesters. Applicants must be enrolled members of federally or state-recognized American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian tribal groups. In keeping with the program's founding mission, these scholars are committed to using their education to improve the health and well-being of their Native communities. Through AIMS, NSCDA members remain dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and increasing the number of scholarships available to future Native healthcare professionals.
