E. Randolph Hooks will discuss his restoration of Spring Bank, the house built in 1793 for John Stark Ravenscroft (1772-1830) and his wife Anne Spotswood Burwell (1773-1814) in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Ravenscroft became the first Episcopal bishop of North Carolina in 1823 and is buried in Raleigh’s Christ Church. Mr. Hooks will provide background on the Ravenscrofts, carpenter John Inge, stone mason Jacob Shelor, and Ravenscroft’s aunt, Lady Jean Skipwith, married to Sir Peyton Skipwith of Prestwould Plantation.

Until his retirement in February 2018, Randolph Hooks was Managing Director and Associate General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase in New York, overseeing the legal aspects of the firm’s underwriting of municipal bonds. Randolph was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and law school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He lived in New York City for the last twenty years, but now lives in rural Lunenburg County, Virginia.
