The Isabel James Lehto Foundation, Inc. recently awarded the Burgwin-Wright House a $30,000 grant to fund masonry repairs to garden walls that have stood for over 150 years.

The Isabel James Lehto Foundation, Inc. is a private grant-making foundation established in 2007. Throughout Lehto’s life, she generously donated funds to many nonprofit organizations in the Wilmington community, and founded the Lehto Foundation to continue her legacy of philanthropy.

Lehto was a 60-year member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina (NSCDA-NC), the nonprofit organization that owns the Burgwin-Wright House. She joined the organization in 1951, the same year the Burgwin-Wright House opened to the public. Lehto served as president of the NSCDA-NC from 1959 to 1964 and again from 1972 to 1973. She also played a significant role in the creation of an endowment for the Society’s four historic houses.

The Burgwin-Wright House offers guided tours interpreting colonial history on the hour Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The museum also hosts a variety of events throughout the year such as lectures, book signings, a Christmas Stroll Through the Past, exhibits and art shows.
