The Burgwin-Wright House received a grant of $1,921.50 from the Landfall Foundation to support “People of the Past”, an annual program provided free of charge to every fourth grade class in the New Hanover County School system. The program focuses on U.S. history during the colonial era and provides students with a living history experience that reinforces what they learn in the classroom.

Arguably the most important element in creating an authentic and immersive experience is the period attire worn by museum educators. Children of this age group have not yet formed a distinct line between fantasy and reality. Therefore, interacting with educators in period dress makes the experience real to them – so much so that they often ask the educators if they live in the house. The Landfall Foundation grant will fund the purchase of colonial attire.

NSCDA-NC President Margaret Hamilton and Executive Director Joy Allen accepted the grant on behalf of the Burgwin-Wright House at a ceremony on November 3.
